The Breakup

She didn't see it coming
How could she?
They weren't even dating
They were just friends for about 2 years and counting
Friends who would talk late at night
About the moon and the stars
No, not really

But they would talk about different issues
Why do guys do this?
Why do girls do that?
He was her go to man
Whenever she had a question
That only he could answer

And of course he was nice
Good looking
Tall dark and handsome
But they were just friends

And then the moment came
When the doors of honesty were opened wide
He told her how he felt
He liked her
He liked her a lot
She told him how she felt
She liked listening to what he had to say
She liked to imagine herself taking long walks
While he held her hand in his

But they were being honest
And honesty rules
So he told her
They could have it all
And still be just friends
But she wanted it all
and she didn't want to be just friends

The Buika Experience

She found her seat shortly after arriving at the venue
The Town Hall of Manhattan
The very same one she would pass daily
On her commute to work

The crowd was very mixed, people of all backgrounds
Of different ages, all sharing a great taste in music

She had no idea of what to expect
After all, it was her first time going to a concert alone
But she wasn't the only one
The woman next to her just happened to buy her ticket
That very evening about a half hour before

There was an opening act
A woman of whom she had never heard of before
But with the dimmed lights and her closed eyes
She was able to enjoy each sound that came out of
The singer's mouth

Like a Shakespearean sonnet whispered in her ear
She was able to fall in love with the song, it's lyrics, it's tone and its feel

Then the woman of the hour
The one that said that she wanted to be more than 'just a black girl'
Because for her, it's important to be 'every girl'
And why not?
Why not embrace the pain and the joy of every girl
And let it out

In a song that was all her own
And could never belong to anyone else
It was the way that she accompanied a story
To the melodic raspiness of her voice
The voice that went up and down with feeling

The timber of her voice was so strong
That you could feel the blues inside your chest
The way she did
The timber of her voice was so strong
That you could feel bulería alegre with each heartbeat
The way she did

A story of beauty is what she is
Because of the honesty that she so openly has
There is nothing wrong with saying the truth
Be it good or bad
And that's what she does
Teaching the listener that 'we all go through it'

Seeing Buika live is an experience for the heart, for the ears and for the mind!

Change

January 13, 2018

The first time she had ever walked into that office
was 6 years ago
her first day on the job
a fateful day in which she was introduced to everyone in the company
from the mellow custodian that made time in the elevator
to the president of the art program with the kind eyes
the kind of eyes that wrinkled in the corners whenever a smile came about

But that was 6 years ago
and so much had changed since then
these days employees came and went
the same way that air comes and goes
through those revolving glass doors
the ones you must pass to get into reception

The chemistry between employees still remained good
a genuine camaraderie between friends
between family

And that just happened to be what hurt the most
knowing that her days would no longer have
that playful banter while waiting for the elevator
listening to the silliest of jokes
the ones that made you laugh just because

So as she walked into that office
for the second time in her life
she knew that a change had come about
as her heart beat inside her chest
like a caged bird flapping its wings furiously
while moving it's beak up and down
trying to push open the door to freedom

She knew that the time had come
for her to flap her wings
and fly away
she was free to make a nest somewhere else
but still nostalgic for the goodbye that loomed
a goodbye to all she came to know
and all who she came to love

Green

As I watched an Expedition Truth rerun with Josh Gates,
I learned that more than half of Iceland believes in Elves
Construction is diverted for their preservation and care
Elves are lovers of the earth
They live to preserve nature in its essence

Perhaps Mr. Trump and a few other people should have
an elf encounter
You know, so that they could realize
Well climate change is real
We need to look after our home

I'm not trying to have earth disappear the way Krypton did
like in the movie with the cute Henry Cavill
Sigh–let's be more considerate

The One

Maybe it's just not for everybody
that one person that's supposed to be
your one true love

the one that you supposedly dreamed about
since the moment you were able to remember your dreams

Maybe it's just about momentary bouts of happiness
that different people are able to
fulfill at different moments

instead of that single one
there are probably a lot ones
times 5, 7 or 8 for all you know

the kind that are 'the one' for that specific moment
so that when you look back and remember
at that trial, tribulation or fun
you're able to smile
because that's just how it was supposed to happen

for the stories, the moments
for the lifetime of experience that
you just wouldn't be able to have
from just that 'one'

Because that's way better than none
Because that's what was just meant to be…

Reasons why she's still single

After giving it some thought
she came up with a few reasons
as to why at the age of 28+
She's still single

For starters
She don't date
She just looking for a spark
With out the spark she won't even try

And then
how can she meet someone if she doesn't go out?
her evenings consist of spooning her maltipoo
while watching movies about dragons
and mythological deities
She's also gotten very into the travel channel
falling in love with all these discoveries that
seem to bring out her inner nerd

And when she talks
it's like a hyper bunny all over the place
that laughs at her own jokes
regardless if they're funny at all

Who ever she meets must be approved
by her dogs
the 3 that star in biweekly snaps
with funny voice & filter

At 28+ she might be too goofy
a tad bit nerdy
and just all around weird
with out a care in the world

Hence her hair is never done
and her idea of dressing up
consists of stepping out of her chucks
and into the patent leather flats

to be worn with an over the knee dress
and just really big hair

This is why at 28+ she's still single

Different

Growing up she always wanted to be different
Different from the person she was with curly hair, dark skin
and a name that most people just couldn't pronounce

She wanted to take on the identity of a fictional character
like those on tv where the girls had great hair and the nicest parents ever
the kind that had really good jobs
yet they found time to be home with their kids
and help them with their homework
they knew exactly what was going on and spoke perfect english

But that wasn't exactly so
She hailed from the 6th floor of an apartment in the projects
where you could hear Frankie Ruiz loud and clear
as a 'hot' car drove by with the best sound system ever

The neighborhood parents spoke broken english
and would work when they found something they liked
if not, they would make the welfare line to ensure they would have
their food stamps at the beginning of the month
and they would never miss the WIC appointments
that granted them milk and cereal

She wanted a name like Melissa with a friend named Stacy
she wanted to hang out at The Max and giggle when her crush looked her way
yet she was way too far from that

The friends she made a school could have formed a map of South America
most of their parents were first generation
working hard to give their kids a good education
the kind that would get them into a good university
where their kids would meet others who did have a name like
Melissa & Stacy
with parents just like those on tv
the kind that would speak perfect english
with mothers that wore pearls over a lavender cardigan
with an over the knee pencil skirt

But by then, she would have already grown to love
everything that made her different
the name that no one could pronounce
with the handle downs and discount clothes
while the girls that sat behind her in class wore Acne jeans
with Calvin Klein tank tops and those jacquard handbags
ones that she had never seen before

By then the differences that she once hated
were the ones she loved the most
because they made her who she was
they added to her story
they made her proud of the colored threads that made her quilt

And she was proud to her own self
woven with different colors
the ones she finally came to understand
