Beach

Right now, all I need is an open beach scene

one where scents of coconut and sunscreen linger in the air

and the salty ocean mist ever so often

This is so that I can sit back and look up

to the clouds that carry my thoughts

and leave me in the present moment

to enjoy my pineapple drink along with the sun warming my face

Plantain

What is it about that green speckled vegetable?

The long one that grows on those trees with large rectangular leaves, very often in the tropics; that if you wait too long it becomes yellow and über sweet.

You know the one, I'm talking about platanos–en ingles plantain.

That for some reason on the upper east coast it has become the symbol of representative of Dominicans all around. Like if they weren't grown in Ecuador where the Chiquita Banana people bring them from in the super market along with bananas that are not, I repeat NOT the same as platanos!

Yes it's as if in the analogy green is to leaf as platano is to Dominican Republic.

No meng, there is more to us than that.

For example, my mom doesn't even like platanos and she's Dominican.

Not everyone is a fan of mangu either, some people prefer to have them frito o maduro not in the likes of a pure de platanos adornado con otras cosas.

Last I thought, mofongo is made with platanos, a dish that is very Puerto Rican yet they have the Coqui to say "Soy Boricua!!!"

Cuban dishes are all about yummy ropa vieja with some maduros on the side, but they have their cigars & the beloved chico to represent them.

We have both mofongo & cigars in DR along with una buena cerveza that you can choose from beginning with the 2 b's & p that is Bohemia, Brahma (light) ;-) y Presidente fría!

Why not have a nice cool one to inspire the love of Dominican culture?

More than a vianda in which people automatically think DOMINICAN–"ta' to loco..."

No No NO there is more to us than that. Don't forget that we like to use tu lo 'abe and zanahoria pa' cuando la cosa ta' buena =)

Like any other culture and ethnicity, there is so much more to explore than the standard of which people miss conceptualize as pertaining to that country.

Visit us and you will see that we are way more than platanos (which I do love) and about enjoying the things of life como el buen amigo y amor de familia.

Check us out, tu lo 'abe

Berri!!!!!!

Unwrap it to reveal a cube of sheer strawberry bliss

Crystallized sugar with the essence of 15 strawberry patches

linger in your mouth to slowly swim the ocean of your senses

The taste, the sensation of berries

Run wild in that patch, but close your eyes at least once as you breathe it all in the fruit of spring .

Strawberries–ah!

[sigh & say ah]

Salsa Night

So everyone is dancing and then all of a sudden the salsa mix comes on

Yippee because Los Adolecentes got it going on

and who doesn't love it when they play Lloraras by Oscar de Leon

Pero I tell you this

If you are not a professional salsa dancer for the club, by which I mean–

if you don't really salsa too well

Then leave the pista to the professionals, because you will get stepped on

With so many turns and twirls you have to be sure of what you're wearing

For example, zapatos bajitos & abiertos may not be the best because

someone and their taco end up saying hello to your foot

Oh it hurts

And then there is the pushing & pushing

people get all into it like it's the Salsa Olympics

Moving pa' qui & pa' alla & turn...

still, you're just learning

but you can groove with the music

from a distance of course

How about near the bar

you know, where people retreat to hold their drinks

while looking out as they sip and tapping their foot

It's an ok place there as you have plenty of free space

with out having to worry about a slight elbow that came with a turn

muy buen lugar to learn

So salsa away, but from a careful distance as you watch everyone clap, tap and dance

UnRequited

"Gosh your pretty"

that was all he needed to start something new

something that would change his life forever

something that along the way would make him grow

It was an important thing that let him see his actions unfold

and the weight that they carry as well

How somethings are more important than others came into perspective

like what a real friend is and what it means to be supportive

Then again, there are mistakes that we all make at some point

some that we put on "oh I was a kid" and really it's just lack of experience

Still, their words have made an effect

one that just between them

has reached more than a few people

Relationships

Over a bottle of spring & an icy tall glass of tap water,

my friend and I talked relationships

The fun of being in them & making things work

What are the key points to a relationship?

The do's & don'ts for when you actually like a person

don't act like a brat & whine all the time

‹it's not cute›

do work with him to have balance in the relationship

don't call him out on things you don't like just because

you're mad

do suggest characteristics that you like, that he can improve on

-tell him you like it when he...

‹he's not a mind reader, so he might not know if you don't tell him›

don't mention other guys just because they're hot

-he could care less about celebrities

do mention that you like him & everything about him

‹he won't mind hearing it ☺›

If you don't like the person

Don't embark on a relationship just because...

-if you're lonely and want to cuddle, get a monkey–they hug back

life is already a roller coaster to before adding relationship swirls

go on and give things a try & don't procrastinate if you have to

say something important

Relationships should fun & beautiful, not convenient

"love, it's a beautiful thing..."

remember that hearts may be hurt, but that there is part of the growing process

ni cuerpo que lo resista" -spanish saying

How to smoke a cigar

First you invite your friend over to the cigar shop,

This is done after munching on an interesting lunch

that left your taste buds wondering…

Then once at the shop, you introduce her to the sweet & spicy blends

that you do not know ;-)

Asking for her introductory expertise on an ancient past time

Once the best cigars are picked out,

The two of you wander on out to a day blessed with sun

Sitting across from one another on a park bench

you cross your legs while gently stirring an imaginary sherry on one hand

The other hand is holding your cigar

While smokes puffs encircle like that of the caterpillar's

Your friend wonders about that distinct allure of a cigar

She quietly finds conversation hoping that it maintains the theme that is light

Eventually your cigar reaches its point as it was very well spent

And you take the last sip of your imaginary sherry

culminating a round of flavor

That is how you smoke a cigar =)

Hmm...

OMG sometimes I get confused

and don't know what to do

To love or fall in love?

Will love just fall? How does it work?

Do we just dive into it or is it already there?

Man all these thoughts move me to think and wonder

To wait more or make things happen...

Why do I hold back? What thoughts, why not go?

Should I???

Q.

We have our friends,

those who we talk to and ask for advice

The advice that we kind of don't want to hear and already know the answer to

Sometimes it's just for reassurance

one that we will get from someone that won't rub it in our face

But hopefully say it with grace

Although really, c'mon those friends who just tell it like it is are the ones that we need

That's the reason why we keep them around

because we know that they won't keep it from us

Simply letting us know what they think as they may disagree with our opinions

Quite fun actually to have the conversation going back and forth while we think

"why was it that I asked?"

And our friend knows this and relishes it

Acknowledging at every moment "well hey, you did ask"

Sabores

Crème brulée, what I like to call the French version of a nice homemade flan.

Straight from Gaul now known as Le France this creamy custard is just as that oven

dessert I like to bake in baño de agua María. With eggs, evaporated milk and thick condensada,

the result of the two is a gentle custard meant to be

enjoyed slowly;

like a nice scotch taken neat as to aprovechar each note of that cane specially fermented.

With that all to familiar taste of amargenta azucar quemada, I cannot help but go in for more.

It's a nice thing for my senses to appreciate the sabor of so many thoughts.

Like the time that sugar got a little too burnt but glazed the flan just the same, the one that I find to still hold as my favorite.

Or the little personal ones I bought at the bodega in a little tin cup where the top was the best part of lightly soft custard

with a brown color like that of the sugary syrup at the bottom.

My crème brulées more delicate in texture have the same fun to spoon off the top revealing a lightly golden custard

where the almibar also dances waiting for the first piece.

Yes these two are mere twins simply served with different styles.

My flan in a triangular slice for each where the le crème bulée çe plus personal

classically set in a small white bowl molded those papita ruffles for décor.

Pero igual, ambos me encantan.

Hoy

Today she felt a little defeat, perhaps disillusioned.

To think that after almost a year in transit, things just stopped at an odd place.

To have shared her story with complete strangers who know nothing of her.

To have repeated such more than once woefully while trying not to break inside.

The question comes "was it all worth it?"

Yes, in many ways it was because with it she learned that she was not the only one.

With it, she removed the mask that others seem to see.

It was not at all easy, but now something that she can put behind her.

Not to forget, but to remind her of how strong she can be and more.

To let her know that He doesn't give anyone more than they can handle.

It is all a test to pass.

Regardless of this outcome, she has to know that given the opportunity, she would have had to do it all the same again.

Ver

Hollywood

There is something about the magic of Hollywood

that allows you to believe…

In the fairy tales of ever after

and dreams that are meant to be

It's all in those fantasies that we live in,

hoping to see come true

Flying at night, while holding hands with a good fairy that leads to Never Land

Slaying the Jabberwock so that all may be well again,

aside from the fact that the Queen of Hearts

has been sent off nowhere

Hollywood, where boy meets girl

in a whirl of romanticism that never ends

but grows…

It's magic

Doth I ask

I have erred many times

Sometimes sin pensar, aveces con hablar

and time again, it happens

So I ask you, look not at my faults,

but at me and who I am today

A person trying to conquer her flaws

A person trying to look beyond that of others

Our mistakes do not determine who we are,

but sometimes they influence who we come to be

Hearty for laughs

There is comedy in humor,

as there are many a ways of relief

Good humor, that which contains widening eyes

at the feats of spoon & dish

running away together

Or even a nice little hen

gathering ingredients of her own

to prepare homemade loaves

It is all in how you see things

With a twinkle in your eye

and a gleam here and there

it is all beautiful

Mr. Hayward

Tony Hayward

I do not like it at all how Capitol Hill is getting all nitty gritty with you.

It is very upsetting to see the way that these representatives are so quick to point and just keep on adding.

We know that the BP oil spill is an awful accident, but I admire you in your courage for taking ownership of what has happened. Like a good chap you have stated the truth that BP is responsible the incident, but enough with this already. I am pretty sure that this is not something that you wanted and while watching the grand jury this morning, it's as if the reps wanted to solely say that it was all you you you you!!!!

Tony Hayward along with the rest of BP are looking for ways into which solve such a problem and are more than willing to clean up.

BP has employed many as you said earlier today (June 17, 2010) and worked hard to be where it is.

So why concentrate on something that we already know by yuckily over emphasizing what we already know.

It was an accident, we know––now it's time for clean up. Capitol Hill we get the point.

Mr. Hayward by taking such ownership, you show much character.

I support you for being who you are.

Enough with naming it, let's start fixing it.

¿Ves?

Every time we look at something, we do so with different eyes

At once we may look to surpass

Later we will stop for more than a second to glance

Then we actually see what it is that makes it what it is

We are able to read between those lines that make it so funny and great

Al vistaso some may say it's not for them

Pero como van a saber if they don't look

It's just de repente and they go

But it's good to really see

So that you may understand why it's so funny

So that you may see what you can learn from it

So that you may fall in love too

¿Entonces qué más que un vistaso?

If

What if things were just like the story books?

You know those fairy tales that always end well with everything charming...

Where after all that happens everything just works out and falls into place.

Well, it kind of is all like that, just in terms of reality. Terms in which we can't easily fast forward to the last page or ask a gypsy to tell us what we want.

The point of many things is to wait and see,

Just enjoy and learn as it all plays out.

For some reason, things are supposed to happen the way they do.

So we can appreciate and actually see.

If there were a time machine to go back and undo all those mistakes, what good would it do? Would we ever really learn from what could have been?

Perhaps not.

It's the big picture that needs to be seen.

On the screen that is our life and has it all accordingly to His plan.

It's the way it should be.

A fairy tale...

te veo a ti

Tan cerca de mi...

En el silencio de la noche

Ella piensa

"En la vida y sus porqués"

En los amores

En los desamores

Ella piensa en él

Lo mira mientras cierra sus ojos

Preguntando se, si tal vez él la puede ver

En el silencio de la noche

Ella piensa

"En la vida y sus porqués"

Postal

The retrovisor is like my portable post card

It fits what I need to see

A set of clouds so fluffy they're like candy

Where the long branches reach out fanning some green

The clouds move and the sun shines through

Making it the best to ever see

I can hold it in my hand to touch the cottony clouds

And the picture dances

To the wind of my dreams

Nice

It's nice to be a student again

To see those familiar faces

Some are big fans, others are the celebrities

and the quiet ones, they're the friends

secretly enjoying knowing who they know

The teachers, they sit back watching their little seeds

growing...

We listen

We learn

We see it all as it turns

And things, they aren't always the same

yet they never change

We face it all with an embrace

firm and sweet, just as we meet

Face it, life's great

when your a student

Txt

In a world of all things digital, it seems like society itself has hopped on the virtual bandwagon.

Conversations and social greetings have moved from the talking phone over to the texting phone where words are exchanged amidst a barrage of smiley faces and lols.

Everything seems to have improved to the standards of black and white where you use all caps to make your point, with a mixture of numbers and punctuation to show emotion, hence the name emoti-cons.

A derivative to which many grow accustomed to as their call plans involve unlimited texting just in case those un-used minutes run out. lol

Well, since it can be just so–I will remember to send out that mass text in celebration and invitation of something good or maybe just to share a little algo sweet.

b@ck_

What if in life there was a backspace button? And we would only be able to use it once.

A button that would simply correct a single mistake that would be erased so easily without leaving the slightest remnants of rubber behind.

For what would you use it?

Would it be for that time someone told you "I love you" in which your response was "thank you"?

Definitely don't think it would be used to erase that one time you got caught cheating on a spelling test in 3rd grade after the pretty girl two rows over decided to tell the teacher about your "notes of assistance". Somehow, that one incident helped you get more friends.

Would you use it to actually study for the SATs so that you could have gotten into the college of your choice–although if that were the case, you probably wouldn't have had all those cool friends now.

What about telling that one person how you really felt, knowing that right now would be different? For all we know, such a person thought of you just as much wondering when it was that you would make a move.

Or do you think that you would save it for later when you could "really use it"?

Then again, why would wait till later?

There is a now!

What is it to be Dominican @ work?

It means that the music should blast

tostones should fry to salami & eggs,

(but in reality they're called fritos

because only the Chinos from take out call 'em tostones)

El ambiente at work is very chill & relax,

lleno de relajos y a real good time

Charlas about the novela and who did what…

A competencia silenciosa is felt

it's all about whose kid is smarter

and which daughter has a better boyfriend

Yea…después llegan las 12 & you know

it's time to take a break

Gimme my arroz con carne with the habichuelas on the side

it's just the salsa that I like

"eso también se come"

my abuela would tell me,

but this picky Americana didn't want that

La comida was good & now I need a nap

A hechar una pavita and then later work

Son las 1 & until 2 it's siesta time

pull down those shades que eh a roncar

I get back to work

it's fun

till tomorrow

we'll do it all again

School

Ah school, the place of social beginnings and many winnings

College students return sometime soon from their winter hiatus

of which most spent it working and others vacationing

Enjoying a break from the cold weather and forgetting about books and papers

Chicas soltandose el cabello to lounge at the beach with hopes to return home superbly tanned

Yes, the fun of school =)

The glee of those halls with stories to tell

Like that hot guy from Brazil (I can only assume)

with the glasses making him look extra smart

Those papers that were stressed over now turned in

after major crunching with out a proof read

Parties resume

dancing away the stress that gets filtered out by the haze

Lunch with your friends during common hour

Chatting away to the sound of soda swishing in a cup,

napkins dispensed and plates picked up...

The happy return of school

it's so cool

oh and there is the homework too ;-)

Fizz

There is a slight buzzing sound

like pop rocks on my tongue,

but in reality, it's just the fizz

The crystalline bubbles that make it to the surface only to pop

and make a sound

I raise the cup to my lips

the fizz makes my lips tingle

Single handedly I feel it

when those bubbles reach my lips

and then poof…

I feel some more & they do the same

The glass of course is a pre-cursor of this Google Images›

it can hear the fizzing and disappearing

With a single pop the bubble mingle

they make me tingle
